Kitchen Safety - Why?
My Family's Story
Accidents happened in the kitchen as I grew up - and thankfully the safety mistakes and accidents we made were just short of "serious" accidents in spite of our kitchen designs. Hands cut open to the bone, dropped kitchen kettles of hot water (missing toes by inches), kitchen drawers with out safety stops crashing onto toes, and falls resulting from carpets with slippery backing are just a few of the accidents in our kitchen - most caused by our carelessness. A few of our kitchen accidents may also be attributed to the poor kitchen design and the general kitchen layouts.
I can safely say that my mother's kitchen had more serious accidents - whether they were due to the kitchens layout or design problems, we will never know. A pressure cooking canner of scalding boiling hot water came tumbling onto her younger brother. Grandma turned to set down the pressure cooker after removing it from her kitchen's cooktop, just as my mom's younger brother had wobbled up behind Grandma! If you understand what a pressure cooker is (A huge pan filled with boiling water, pressurized steam, and canning jars) - you will understand how serious this kitchen accident was!
My goal here is not to talk about our family! Hopefully this short introduction can help to show the reasons why preventing kitchen accidents by adding countertop space next to your stove is so very important for your kitchen's safety.
Kitchen accidents< happen! Many kitchen accidents are more serious than simply scars and burns which heal - kitchen accidents cause death!

Understand Your Kitchen
Learning the best new kitchen design by planning for your home's layout is essential for your kitchen's safety - before remodeling. One accident like my Grandma, and you may have regrets you did not implement a safe layout for the rest of your life. Understanding the life you live in your kitchen, and listing in a notebook the cooking habits in your kitchen aids tremendously in the planning and design of a new safe kitchen.
Kitchen Cooks Burn Themselves - Over and Over!
Surprisingly to myself, Burns and scalds were one of the most common accidents in a kitchen. The accident happens over and over again - the kitchen's cook loses control of a hot pot trying to safely remove the pan from the kitchen's cooktop surface! The pan slips, which scalds the kitchen's cook!
Avoid the Blame Game
Accidents happen - such is life. When accidents do happen, we must learn the best methods to prevent - Future accidents in our kitchens. One of the best ways to prevent future kitchen accidents is by removing a dangerous layout and implementing a safe kitchen design.
Children Get Scalded
Another common kitchen accident is young children reaching the handles of a heating pan on the range's hot burner. The young child makes it to the kitchen's cooktop, reaches the handle, the pan tilts, falls, and scalds the young child! What do you think? How could kitchen planning help this accident be avoided?
Countertop Space Benefits
With this kitchen countertop space added by your cook top, you now have a safe area to set your hot pots. This counter space provides room for pot handles that might jut into walking areas of your kitchen. When your pans handles extend over this countertop space this aids in the safety of your kitchen by eliminating the threat of your child or grandchild reaching the pans handle.
