Building Layout for Construction of a New Building
Before any construction begins, string lines must be set up to show your new building layout. Building codes may require exact layout elevations of the building foundation so be sure to take care in laying out your string lines with great accuracy.
Corner Layout Boards for Your Building May Serve 2 Purposes
If you level your corner layout boards for your new building with a transit, they may also serve as a foundation leveling guide. Adding an additional center support board is an additional building tip that works great for small buildings. You can set a straight board from this center support board onto your corner layout boards and double check your footing foundation board height with out needing to get out the transit. Of course - double check your work! Someone eating lunch may have used your building layout boards for a chair!
Wood Stake Driving Tip -Use a large metal bar to loosen up the soil before pounding in your stakes. This is a must in many soils if you use wooden stakes for your building layout. If you do not have a 5' metal bar, a metal stake or a wrecking bar will also do the trick.
Layout Tip -String line adjustment for your building layout boards. There are a number of methods to adjust your corner string lines layout with out having to pull out your nail or screw each time. One quick layout method if you have extra 2' squares and stair gauges around is to fasten your square to the top of your corner layout board. Fasten your string around your stair gauge and simply loosen and slide to adjust your layout.
Building Layout Tip -Alternative string line layout adjustment. Dado out a 3/4" - 1/1/2" groove into a 2x6 or 2x8 for each corner board. We often go with a full 8' corner board although 4' is popular. With 8' if our building layout needs more adjustment than we initially thought the extra length is nice. Another bonus - We like to use the corner layout boards to measure our footing height. I know - You modern footing crew guys like to use those annoying beeping self leveling transits for footing and wall layouts... Anyway - After you have your bottom layout board dado-ed out - Screw a board the size of your dado to what ever size board you wish - And now a simple C vice clamp is used to fasten and to easily adjust your layout strings.
