Author Note - At Age 12 I wanted to build a new doghouse for our dog Happy. I did not know how to build, and the online searches for free dog house plans only confused me.

At age 15 I again pursued the doghouse building idea feeling sorry for our dog sleeping in an old crate in the corner of his dog kennel. I wanted to know how to build Happy a new home but because I did not know how to build a pet house. As most young teenagers I also wanted free dog house plans - And after searching for free dog house plans online I again was frustrated.

There were extra large dog house plans and some small dog house plans -But no plans with easy how to build a wood dog house for a non builder. Finally I combined the free plans I found and also used my own sketches to help myself understand how to build a new doghouse. It may have taken me 2 days to build the small cedar dog home, after two days of scratching my head and trying to understand how to build the dog house from black and white builder blueprints.

The Featured Free Doghouse Building Size
The free doghouse building plans are for a small to medium size 4x4 wooden style dog or cat house. This free plan design fits most large dogs quite easily unless you have an extra large St. Bernard dog in which case one of our small gallery shed plans may work just fine for you. If you have a small Snoopy dog you may want to look elsewhere for your doghouse plans or purchase a small igloo pet house building or crate as the 4x4 dog house works well for a medium to large size dog although this size is also popular for a cat house. - Use a piece of carpet for your doghouse door. A scrap piece of carpet works well sandwiched between two lath strips.

Live in a cold environment? Add a layer of foam insulation to your doghouse floor is a great idea under your floor sheet. Just remember to add the thickness to your wall sheet framing.

Tip - Barrel for a Doghouse
A plastic or metal barrel with a side removed is a quick easy dog house.

Tip - Wooden Storage Crate for a Doghouse
A wooden storage crate with a treated plywood sheet set over it with an angled 2x6 under one end also works for a fast easy dog house.
