What's the best way to create a dust-free environment at home?

I'm finishing a piece of furniture and it looks like small specks of dust are settling in my polyurethane ruining my glass-like smooth surface. I thought about getting my steamer and shooting it all over the room to weight down dust particles, but I didn't know how long it would take before I could bring my piece in after that to prevent moisture getting in the finish and if the room would have already filled back up with dust by then (dust is a mysterious thing and seems to come out of nowhere).

Buying a tent from a garage sale works!
$5 - $15 Bucks is less than a roll of plastic.
If you can't find a tent covering it with plastic works or tarping off an area.
Adding Moisture with a squirt bottle ahead of time is good.

Foot Movement outside does create the dust so vacuuming ahead of time is also good.

Wishing you the Best!

Your not going to be able to get a dust free room with out some major expense. So I suggest that you build a temporary frame around the piece of furniture, re-sand the piece, re-apply the polyurethane and then cover the piece with a piece of plastic large enough to cover the whole piece with out the plastic touching the furniture as a dust cover.

The only way to create a dust free environment is to get rid of moving air. Anyone with forced air or open windows will have dust settle on everything. Radiant heating works better at controlling dust. It doesn't blow air, and dust that settles will stay there.

If you are just creating a temporary environment, get a big tent. The fumes won't be fun. Go outside to finish it if weather allows. Dust is a much larger problem indoors than outdoors for most people.

I refinish furniture. When I'm done sanding a piece I take a wet cloth to the room where I sanded and clean up all the dust. Then I vacuum, I do this as many times necessary before I stain the wood. If the weather is nice enough then I move the furniture outside. Sometimes, if a piece is taking a few days I will dust and vacuum before I resume working on it just to be sure that no dust will dry on the furniture and ruin my finish. Good luck!

Use dust buster
